Dorothy Daley Receives New Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Friday, January 23, 2015

Dr. Dorothy Daley, an Associate Professor in the School of Public Affairs and Administration at the University of Kansas and Dr. Michelle Frisco, Associate Professor of Sociology at Penn State have received a three-year $750,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The grant, “Connecting Population Health Scientists across Disciplines: Generating Evidence, Informing Research Translation and Fostering a Culture of Health” will be used to develop three conferences that will highlight cutting edge population health research and foster the development of a much needed interdisciplinary professional space for population health scientists to convene, collaborate and share knowledge. Forums that generate and improve population health science help ensure that a high quality evidence base underpins the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s new major initiative, advancing a Culture of Health in the US.

The conferences are an innovative collaboration between the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Penn State’s Population Research Institute, The University of Kansas’s Institute for Policy and Social Research, and the newly incorporated Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Science (IAPHS), an organization aimed at fostering connections between population health science, scientists and stakeholders who can utilize population health research to improve the health of individuals and society. Frisco and Daley are on the Executive Board of IAPHS along with colleagues from the Association of American Geographers, New York Academy of Medicine, University of Maryland, and Boston College.

The initial conference will be held in conjunction with and in partnership with the Institute of Medicine’s Roundtable on Population Health Improvement in September 2015. Subsequent meetings will be held in 2016 and 2017, with the 2016 meeting slated to be held at Penn State.
