Workshop on Government Performance Research

The Workshop on Government Performance Research (GPR) fosters research and interdisciplinary dialogue on the relationships among government authorities, nonprofit organizations, businesses, academic institutions, and the general citizenry about delivering public services more efficiently, effectively, equitably, and with more accountability.  It also examines how public resources can be used in a more sustainable way to benefit communities for multiple generations.

Under the directorship of Professor Alfred Tat-Kei Ho of the School of Public Affairs & Administration, we believe that academic research in government performance should be grounded in theory, should address practical problems that are relevant to community stakeholders and the general citizenry, should be value-driven, and should use rigorous, evidence-based methodologies that address important research questions. 

Key Activities

The key activities of the Workshop include:

  • Engaged research that helps policymakers, public managers, and civic leaders find effective solutions to address government performance challenges;
  • Interdisciplinary dialogue and the exchange of ideas that help produce innovative thinking and advance theories and methods concerning government performance research;
  • The integration of research, teaching, and service activities related to public governance and government performance;
  • The advancement of theories and practices of public governance and government performance management locally, nationally, and globally through engagement with students, scholars, and practitioners.

Research 

The GPR Workshop produces research focusing on:

  • Factors that influence the outcomes, perceptions, and value of public services;
  • The design, outcomes, and challenges of performance budgeting reforms in different communities and countries;
  • Challenges and practices of “good” governance in different political, economic, and cultural settings; and
  • Use of information technologies and data analytics to advance public governance and government performance.
