Special School Leadership Announcement

Tuesday, February 7, 2017

Greetings Alumni and Friends,

The KU School of Public Affairs and Administration announces that Reginald Robinson will step down from his position as Director, effective June 30, 2017.

It has been a distinct honor for me to serve as the Director of this remarkable and impressive school. With its star-studded faculty, dedicated staff, outstanding students, and an incredibly accomplished and engaged alumni network that spans the globe, this school is among the University’s most precious crown jewels,” said Robinson, who has served as Director since June 2014.

Robinson, who served previously at KU as Counselor and Chief of Staff to Chancellor Robert Hemenway (1998-2002) and Associate Professor of Law (1989-93), and also as President and CEO of the Kansas Board of Regents (2002-10), said, “It has been my privilege to lead this nationally-renowned School, and I am grateful to the School community for its strong support. At this stage of my career, however, I am ready to take a brief pause to consider other opportunities that might enable me to engage professionally in new and different ways. In the meantime, I am committed to assuring a smooth transition as the School embarks on this leadership change.”

The faculty wishes to thank Professor Robinson for his exceptional leadership and service to the School of Public Affairs and Administration. Under his direction, the School has grown in new ways, including the addition of faculty members, the creation of an undergraduate degree in law and society, and the launch of a scholarship fundraising campaign. Professor Robinson effectively engaged with internal and external stakeholders, including students, alumni, and practitioners, to advance the mission of the School.

While Director, Professor Robinson was appointed to the Editorial Board of Public Administration Review and was elected to the Board of Directors for the National Academy of Public Administration, into which he was inducted in 2008. He was just appointed Chairman of that Board in November 2016. His many talents benefited the School and positioned it to pursue new goals and opportunities.

A faculty committee has been formed to facilitate this transition and will meet soon with College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean Carl Lejuez regarding that process.

The School of Public Affairs and Administration is consistently ranked as the best graduate school in the nation in city management and urban policy and it is among the top graduate schools in the nation in public management administration. The distinction reflects the school’s commitment to providing first quality public administration education to those preparing for public service careers at the local, state, national or international levels, or in the nonprofit sector.
