KU SCHOOL OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS AND ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCES NEW FACULTY APPOINTMENT FOR HANNES ZACHARIAS

(LAWRENCE, KS MAY 21, 2018)      The KU School of Public Affairs and Administration (SPAA) announces the appointment of former Johnson County, KS manager, Hannes Zacharias, to the faculty as a professor of practice beginning Jan 1, 2019.   Dr. Rosemary O'Leary, SPAA Director, made the announcement at the annual Kansas City/County Managers Conference, held in Lawrence April 26-27.

Zacharias will fill a new “Professor of Practice” position, which is designed to enhance students’ education in public administration by more fully integrating theory, research, and practice.

“We are thrilled to have Mr. Zacharias join the University of Kansas.  It was a unanimous decision by our faculty to bring Hannes’ lifetime of professional experience to the top-ranked program in city management in the country.  Our students will benefit from this rich combination of research and practice both in the classroom and in jobs they will hold as public leaders in the future.” said Dr. O’Leary.

Zacharias’ duties will begin in earnest January 2019, teaching public administration master’s students at three campuses: Edwards Campus in Overland Park, Lawrence, and in Leavenworth.   “I hope to add value to our courses by educating students on how the theories taught in class can be used in the day-to-day work of a public administrator.   Students are sacrificing a great deal to obtain this critical knowledge and I am passionate to ensure they understand it and can use it to leave our communities better than they found them”, said Zacharias.

The School of Public Affairs and Administration at KU offers both academic and workplace-based professional development education to strengthen the provision of public services in society. It is the #1 ranked best graduate school in the nation in Local Government Management (2017 US News and World Report Best Graduate Schools) and among the top nine graduate schools in the nation in Public Management and Leadership.
